BCCI Rejects PCB’s Hybrid Model Proposal for ICC Events
The BCCI has reportedly rejected the PCB’s hybrid model for ICC events in India. This raises tensions over the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, to be hosted in Pakistan.
The Telegraph India reported that the PCB proposed a hybrid model. Under it, India’s matches would take place in Dubai instead of Pakistan. However, the PCB also demanded that future ICC events in India adopt the same model. The BCCI rejected this condition. They said there is no security threat in India, and no need for such an arrangement.
Why Did the BCCI Reject the Hybrid Model?
The BCCI has issued multiple statements. They say the Indian team will not go to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy due to security concerns. The board sees no reason to adopt a hybrid model for ICC events in India. The country has a proven record of hosting international tournaments without security issues.
“Sources told The Telegraph on Tuesday that the BCCI has sent a clear message to the ICC brass in this regard leading to a fresh impasse. The BCCI’s contention is simple – there is no security threat in India and hence no question of accepting such an arrangement,” the report stated.
India is set to host several major ICC tournaments in the coming decade, including:
- Women’s ODI World Cup (2025)
- T20 World Cup (2026, co-hosted with Sri Lanka)
- Champions Trophy (2029)
- Men’s ODI World Cup (2031)
The BCCI’s stance dismisses the PCB’s demand for a hybrid arrangement for these events.
Potential Consequences for PCB and Champions Trophy 2025
The deadlock raises questions about who will host the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. If the PCB insists on its hybrid model, it may lose the tournament. Reports say the PCB threatened to quit the Champions Trophy if the ICC moved the tournament to another host country.
Efforts are reportedly underway to resolve the deadlock.
“It is understood that all relevant parties are working towards finding an amicable solution to end the crisis and the ICC board will reconvene in the next few days,” the report further stated.
What’s at Stake?
The ICC Champions Trophy has caused a rift between the BCCI and PCB. It shows the larger tensions between India and Pakistan, in politics and cricket. India will host multiple ICC tournaments in the coming years. The BCCI’s firm rejection of the PCB’s hybrid model shows its control over global cricket.
