Big Blow for PCB: ICC May Reject Key Demands on Champions Trophy and Tri-Series

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) faces a major setback. The ICC, led by Jay Shah, will reportedly reject three key demands from the PCB. This includes Pakistan’s hybrid hosting model for the 2025 Champions Trophy. It also includes a proposed tri-series at a neutral venue. It would involve India, Pakistan, and a third country.

Champions Trophy Hybrid Hosting Model in Jeopardy

The PCB, the 2025 Champions Trophy host, has pushed for a hybrid model to host the event. India refuses to travel to Pakistan. According to Cricbuzz, the majority of ICC board members—15 in total—are open to this model. The PCB’s demand for a hybrid model at all future ICC events in India has sparked controversy. Reports say this demand will dominate the agenda at the next ICC Board Meeting.

PCB’s Compensation and Tri-Series Proposals

The PCB has sought compensation for its matches with India if they shift to a neutral venue. The board wants payment for three group matches, a semi-final, and the final if they leave Pakistan. This request should not face much opposition. But, the ICC’s stance is unclear.

The PCB also demands a tri-series at a neutral venue. It should feature India, Pakistan, and a third nation. But, due to the tense political and sporting ties, this proposal is expected to be rejected. The two nations only face off in ICC and Asian Cricket Council events. This complicates the ambitious plan.

India vs Pakistan Group Stage Separation Likely Rejected

The PCB has also suggested that, if the hybrid model is approved, India and Pakistan be in separate groups. This would prevent Pakistan from playing any league matches outside its territory. However, sources say the ICC will likely reject this demand. India-Pakistan matches are the most-watched in cricket. They generate huge revenue for broadcasters and sponsors.

As tensions persist, the ICC’s final decision will impact international cricket’s future.
