Aakash Chopra Predicts Delhi Capitals as WPL 2025 Title Contenders
The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 starts on February 14. Royal Challengers Bengaluru will play against Gujarat Titans in the first match. Aakash Chopra, a former India cricketer, feels excited. He believes Delhi Capitals (DC) are strong title contenders. He points to their solid performances in the first two seasons of the league.
Delhi Capitals’ Consistency Makes Them Title Contenders
Delhi Capitals topped the table in WPL 2023 and 2024. However, they lost in the finals both times. This includes a defeat at their home ground, Arun Jaitley Stadium. Chopra thinks their style and consistency make them strong contenders for WPL 2025.
“Success is always defined by trophies, but in the first two seasons of the TATA WPL, Delhi Capitals have truly stood out with their style of play and consistency. I know they haven’t won a title yet, but they came very close last season. Given their performances, they will definitely be one of the favourites this year as well,” Chopra said on Disney+ Hotstar.
DC will begin their WPL 2025 campaign against Mumbai Indians in Vadodara on February 15.
Concerns Over DC’s Opening Pair of Lanning and Shafali
Meg Lanning & Shafali Verma
Delhi Capitals will again have Meg Lanning as captain. Young star Shafali Verma will also lead the batting lineup. However, Chopra expressed concerns about their form and consistency heading into the tournament.
Meg Lanning has played limited cricket since retiring from international cricket.
Shafali Verma had a tough time in ODIs against New Zealand last year. As a result, she was dropped from the Indian squad.
Shafali shined in domestic cricket, even though she was left out of the national team. She finished as:
Top run-scorer in the Senior Women’s One-Day Challenger Trophy (414 runs in 5 matches, Avg: 82.80, SR: 145.26).
Leading scorer in the Senior Women’s One Day Trophy (527 runs, Avg: 75.29, SR: 152.31).
“Since Meg Lanning’s retirement from international cricket, she hasn’t been in her best form. Meanwhile, Shafali Verma has also lost her spot in the Indian squad.”
“Neither of them has been scoring runs consistently, but I’m eager to see how they perform in Season 3 of the WPL. One thing is certain—it’s going to be both challenging and exciting,”Chopra concluded.
