Jasprit Bumrah shone again. He led India to a 295-run win over Australia in the first Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Bumrah took eight wickets to win the match at the Optus Stadium in Perth. His fiery spells at the start of both innings kept the Australians from gaining a foothold.

Bumrah’s stunning performance earned him the Player of the Match award. It also drew praise from former India head coach Ravi Shastri. He called Bumrah a “special bowler” for his self-reliance and tactics.

Ravi Shastri, who groomed Bumrah as India’s head coach, shared a story. It was about the pacer’s self-reliance in his 2018 Test debut series in South Africa.

“He is a special bowler and doesn’t need the help of his captain to set the field. In his debut series in South Africa, he didn’t take the help of the skipper to set the field. I saw him doing it for himself and that shows the greatness and the talent of a bowler. He knew from the starting what he wanted,”  – Ravi Shastri told Wasim Akram.

Shastri’s story shows Bumrah’s tactical mind. It has fueled his rise as one of the world’s best fast bowlers.

Praise for Bumrah’s Captaincy

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram praised Bumrah’s leadership and bowling in the Perth Test. Akram praised Bumrah for seamlessly stepping into the captaincy in Rohit Sharma’s absence. He balanced his duties as both skipper and lead bowler.
