Champions Trophy 2025: Hybrid Model Confirmed, India to Play in Dubai
“It’s been agreed in principle by all parties that the 2025 Champions Trophy will be held in the UAE and Pakistan with India playing its matches in Dubai. It’s a win-win situation for all stakeholders,” the ICC source told PTI.
Hybrid Model Secured for ICC Events Till 2027
The hybrid model agreement covers all ICC events through 2027. This includes the 2025 Champions Trophy. ICC President Jay Shah and other key Board of Directors, including Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials, finalized this arrangement following discussions.
PCB’s Reciprocal Demands
The PCB had initially demanded a hybrid hosting framework until 2031. However, the ICC has agreed to this structure only until 2027. Under this agreement:
- During the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, Pakistan’s matches will be held in Sri Lanka.
- The Indian women’s team may play Pakistan at a neutral venue, depending on the schedules.
The PCB is also discussing compensation for allowing this during the Champions Trophy. The details are still under discussion.
Champions Trophy Schedule Delayed
This development clears the way for the long-awaited release of the Champions Trophy 2025 schedule. Star Sports, the broadcaster, has been pressing for the schedule. It should be announced soon.
The ICC’s deal with its broadcaster requires sharing tournament schedules at least 90 days in advance. However, the delay in resolving these hosting challenges had pushed back the announcement.
Key Statements
PCB head Mohsin Naqvi stressed that cricket must come first.
“Cricket should win, that’s most important but with respect for all. We are going to do what’s best for cricket. Whichever formula we go for, it would be on equal terms,” Pakistan Cricket Board head Mohsin Naqvi had stated after the last ICC meet.
This agreement has improved international cricket relations. It has also addressed long-standing political and logistical issues.
