ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Hybrid Model Proposal Gains Momentum

The ICC will propose a hybrid hosting model for the 2025 Champions Trophy. This follows India’s decision not to travel to Pakistan. The ICC board will meet online on November 29 to make a final, binding decision on all member nations.

What Is the ICC’s Hybrid Model Proposal?

The proposed hybrid model would have 10 matches in Pakistan. A neutral country would host five games, including the semifinal and final. The UAE (Dubai and Abu Dhabi) and South Africa are being considered as alternatives. They have better logistics and weather.

Despite resistance from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the ICC sees limited options. A compromise could be to host both semifinals and the final in Pakistan if India fails to qualify. While this arrangement would come with operational challenges, it might appease the PCB.

PCB’s Resistance and the ICC’s Majority Support

The PCB has consistently opposed the hybrid model, calling it “unacceptable.” With most ICC board members likely to back the proposal, the PCB may be in the minority. A formal vote among the 14 board members could solidify the hybrid model as the final decision.

If the PCB rejects the hybrid model, the ICC may move the tournament from Pakistan. This could cause a huge loss for Pakistan’s financial stake in the event.

Financial and Political Ramifications

The PCB must consult the Pakistan government before replying to the ICC’s decision. If the Champions Trophy is moved, Pakistan could lose millions in hosting fees. Also, a Champions Trophy without India is seen as unacceptable. This view holds for both the ICC and the global cricket community.

This decision could affect Pakistan’s participation in tournaments in India. These include the Women’s World Cup, the Asia Cup, and the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Neutral Venue Options: UAE and South Africa

The ICC is still undecided on where India’s games will be played. The UAE is close and convenient. But, South Africa’s weather in February and March makes it a strong alternative. The Emirates Cricket Board and Cricket South Africa are expected to hold talks soon.

Potential Fallout in Asian Cricket

If the authorities accept the hybrid model, it could affect more than just the Champions Trophy. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) sold broadcast rights for $170 million. It may move the 2024 Asia Cup from India to Sri Lanka or Bangladesh as a peacekeeping measure.
