KL Rahul or Shubman Gill Can Play Like Cheteshwar Pujara: Aakash Chopra
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has weighed in on the controversial exclusion of Cheteshwar Pujara from India’s Test squad for the ongoing tour of Australia. The Indian Express reports that Gautam Gambhir advocated for Pujara’s inclusion. He cited Pujara’s role in India’s Test series victories Down Under. The selection committee rejected the proposal. It seems to end Pujara’s Test career.
Pujara’s Past Contributions in Australia
Pujara’s performances in Australia have been nothing short of iconic. In the two previous Border-Gavaskar series, he was key to India’s success. He even won the Player of the Series award once. Pujara is known for withstanding relentless Aussie bowling attacks. His resilience was shown by his willingness to take body blows to save his wicket.
Aakash Chopra’s Take on Pujara’s Role
“Gautam Gambhir wanted Cheteshwar Pujara for the tour but the selectors said no. If you look at Pujara’s stats, he was magnificent in the two previous series. He was the Player of the Series on one occasion. Pujara took a lot of blows on his body but didn’t allow the Aussies to take his wicket in the series.
He suggested that KL Rahul and Shubman Gill have the potential to replicate Pujara’s role. “The question arises about the players who can play like Pujara. I feel KL Rahul and Shubman Gill are the two current cricketers who can play like him if they remain in the middle,” Aakash Chopra said.
High Stakes in Sydney
With India trailing 1-2 in the series, the final Test in Sydney is a crucial decider for both teams. Without Pujara, can India handle the Aussie attack in tough spots?
