New Zealand omits star spinner Ajaz Patel from England Test squad.
In a surprise, New Zealand left out Ajaz Patel from the squad for the Test series against England. This is despite his game-changing performance in the recent series against India. Patel took 11 wickets in the third Test against India, leading the Black Caps to a historic series sweep. The selectors preferred all-rounder Mitchell Santner. They cited his recent form and wider skills.
Patel’s record-breaking performance against India
Ajaz Patel shone against India in the third Test. He took 11 wickets for 160 runs. His contribution helped New Zealand win by 25 runs. They completed a rare 3-0 series sweep over India. This series win was a big achievement for New Zealand. They became the first team to sweep India in a home Test series.
Selection Decisions: Santner Preferred, Patel Omitted
Patel was remarkable. But, selectors chose to focus on Santner. He took 13-157 in the second Test against India. Sam Wells, the lead selector, praised Santner’s consistency. He called him an essential part of the team. “Wells explained, ‘Mitch has performed at an exceptional level since his recall.’ He brings a lot of confidence to our lineup.'”
Despite his recent success, Patel has often faced exclusion in New Zealand’s home Test series. After scoring 10 and 119 against India in 2021, the team dropped him from the home series with Bangladesh.
Key Additions: Williamson Returns, New Talent Joins Squad
Kane Williamson will return for the England series after a groin injury. Tom Latham will remain the team’s captain. The selectors have added uncapped all-rounder Nathan Harris to the squad. He has strong domestic form. Wells commented on Harris’s selection, “Nathan is a proven talent with a first-class record.”
Schedule for the England Series
The three-Test series against England will start on November 28 in Christchurch. The second Test is on December 6-10 in Wellington. The series will end with a third Test in Hamilton on December 14.
