Rohit Sharma to Retire After ICC Champions Trophy 2025?
BCCI Seeks Clarity on India Captain’s Future
Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, may soon have to decide on his future in international cricket. This could happen after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. After retiring from T20Is last year, he led India to a T20 World Cup win. Now, there’s growing speculation he might also leave ODIs and Tests.
BCCI Pushes for Rohit Sharma’s Retirement Decision
The Times of India says the BCCI wants Rohit Sharma to share his plans after the Champions Trophy. They want to create a roadmap for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Reports indicate that Rohit had previously considered retiring from Test cricket before reconsidering.
“The selectors and the board had discussions with Rohit Sharma during the last selection meeting regarding his future beyond the Champions Trophy. He has been advised to assess his long-term plans as the team management strategizes for the next World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and the upcoming ODI World Cup. Their objective is to ensure a well-coordinated transition with everyone on the same page,” a BCCI source told the publication.
India’s Leadership Transition: Who Will Replace Rohit Sharma?
The BCCI wants to start a leadership change in ODIs and Tests. Jasprit Bumrah, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and Yashasvi Jaiswal may be in the mix for Test captain.
Jasprit Bumrah: The Frontrunner with Fitness Concerns
Bumrah is a top choice for India’s Test captaincy. However, his long-term fitness is a worry. His availability for long Test series is unclear. This may prompt selectors to look at other options.

Shubman Gill: A Work in Progress
Gill is in the captaincy mix, but doubts linger. His inconsistent Test performances raise questions about his readiness for the role.
Rishabh Pant & Yashasvi Jaiswal: Future Leadership Prospects
Pant’s return from injury makes him a strong leader. Jaiswal is being seen as a future captain.
“Bumrah’s availability for extended Test series or an entire season remains uncertain, which may lead selectors to seek a more stable option. While Shubman Gill is considered a leadership prospect, his Test performances have been inconsistent. Rishabh Pant is another strong candidate, and there is also a possibility of grooming young talent like Yashasvi Jaiswal for the role,” the report added.
