Virat Kohli Needs Hundred in Third Test to Equal Sunil Gavaskar’s Rare Record
Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli can make history in the BGT’s 2024-25 Brisbane Test. After India’s 10-wicket loss in the second Test at Adelaide, Australia leveled the series 1-1. Kohli is close to a remarkable milestone.
At 36, he can become the third visiting batter in 147 years of cricket to score centuries in all five major Australian stadiums. Only Sunil Gavaskar and Alastair Cook have done it.
India’s Push for a Series Lead
The Brisbane Test is crucial for India as they seek to bounce back after their Adelaide loss. The visitors had started the series with a 295-run win in Perth. But, they could not sustain their momentum in the second Test.
Kohli’s performance has been mixed so far in this series. In four innings, he has one century and three low scores: 5 and an unbeaten 100 at the Optus Stadium in Perth, then 7 and 11 in the Adelaide pink-ball Test.
Kohli’s Quest for a Rare Achievement
If Kohli scores a century in Brisbane, he will match Sunil Gavaskar’s rare record. It is for centuries at all five top Australian Test venues. Gavaskar achieved this feat with hundreds in Brisbane, Perth, and Melbourne in 1977. Then, he scored centuries in Adelaide and Sydney in 1985.
England’s Alastair Cook also joined this club. He scored centuries in Perth (2006), Brisbane, Adelaide, and Sydney (2010-11), and Melbourne (2017).
Kohli has three centuries at the Adelaide Oval, two in Perth, and one each in Melbourne and Sydney. However, Brisbane remains the missing piece in this illustrious puzzle. His lone Test at the Gabba was in the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He scored 19 and 1.
Kohli’s Dominance in Australia
Virat Kohli is the only visiting cricketer to score 10+ centuries in Australia’s formats. He has 12 hundreds. Of visiting Test cricketers, only legends Jack Hobbs and Walter Hammond have more centuries in Australia than Kohli.
If Kohli achieves this, it will make him one of the greatest visiting batters in Australia.
