WTC Final 2025: Basit Ali Calls for India vs Australia Rematch
Basit Ali, a former Pakistani cricketer, wants a rematch in the 2025 World Test Championship Final. It should be India vs Australia. This is in light of the ongoing WTC cycle. Ali, a former Pakistan batter, shared his views on India’s struggles in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He thinks Australia has a strong chance to reach the final.
“India and Australia Should Compete in the Final”
On the WTC Final, Basit Ali said India and Australia deserve to compete in the marquee clash. “If India are out, Australia have a bright chance as India have just three games left while Australia will play five. However, the final should be between India and Australia,” he said.
In the 2023 WTC Final, Australia dominated India, winning by 209 runs at The Oval. This was India’s second straight loss in a WTC Final. They lost to New Zealand in the 2019-21 edition.
India’s Challenges in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy
India began their five-Test series against Australia on a high. They won by 295 runs at Perth’s Optus Stadium. However, the tables turned in the second match. Australia crushed India by 10 wickets in the pink-ball Test at Adelaide Oval.
Reflecting on India’s position in the series, Basit Ali remarked, “It would be tough now and India should concentrate on winning the Border-Gavaskar Ttrophy instead of the scoreline. The whitewash against New Zealand is hurting India and they would regret it as it was a big mistake. I can understand if England end up winning in India but New Zealand winning three consecutive Test is beyond imagination,” he added.
Australia’s Strong Position in the WTC
Australia’s position looks more secure. They have five matches left in the current WTC cycle. The Aussies, with a strong squad, will reach their second straight WTC Final.
Can India and Australia Recreate the 2023 Final?
An India vs Australia final would reignite one of the fiercest rivalries in cricket. Both teams are Test cricket powerhouses. Their rematch in the WTC Final would draw global attention.
Australia is higher on the WTC points table. India must fight back in the remaining matches to stay hopeful.
