“I asked him, ‘What’s your name?’ He replied, ‘Yashasvi Jaiswal.’ I then asked where he lived. He said, ‘I live in a tent and I’m staying here alone for cricket,'” Jwala shared. Jwala, moved by the boy’s determination, recalled his own struggles. So, he decided to take Jaiswal under his wing.
Overcoming Poverty and Building a Future
Jaiswal’s path to success was far from easy. Before meeting Jwala, he often went without food. He took odd jobs, like selling snacks at cricket matches, to support himself. In 2013, Jwala took in Jaiswal. He faced unique challenges. Jwala provided coaching, and emotional and financial support.
“He lacked confidence because people had planted doubts in his mind,” Jwala said. “He also had a knee injury and was struggling with fitness. But I saw his potential and promised myself that I’d make him my first India player.”
Jwala’s mentorship extended beyond cricketing technique. He aimed to boost Jaiswal’s mental strength. He helped him overcome the scars of his early struggles.
From Azad Maidan to International Glory
With Jwala’s guidance, Jaiswal honed his skills and began dominating domestic cricket. His strong play in the IPL earned him a spot on the Indian Test squad in 2023.
