Ajinkya Rahane will likely captain the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2025. There was speculation that all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer would take the reins. A Times of India report says Rahane is 90% confirmed as the new KKR captain, replacing Shreyas Iyer. Iyer was sold to Punjab Kings for a record ₹26.75 crore in the recent IPL 2025 mega auction.
KKR signed Rahane for just ₹1.5 crore on day two of the Jeddah auction. They hope his leadership will help them win another title.
Venkatesh Iyer’s Hopes Dashed Despite ₹23.75 Crore Price Tag
As the IPL 2025 season approached, many expected Venkatesh Iyer to lead KKR. The franchise had spent ₹23.75 crore on him at the auction. Iyer, a Madhya Pradesh all-rounder, is willing to take the role. He wants to build a strong team environment.
“I have always believed that captaincy is just a tag, but leadership is about creating an environment where everyone feels they can play for this team and contribute. If given the responsibility, I would be more than happy to do it,” Venkatesh told Jio Cinema moments after IPL 2025 mega auction.
However, KKR’s management appears to have chosen Rahane due to his proven track record as a leader in domestic cricket.
Why KKR Chose Rahane as Captain
Rahane’s appointment is not without merit. The veteran batter showcased his leadership prowess in domestic cricket, guiding Mumbai to a Ranji Trophy title in the 2023-24 season before also lifting the Irani Trophy. His experience as a captain in high-pressure situations likely influenced KKR’s decision.
“Yes, at the moment it’s 90% confirmed that Ajinkya will be the new KKR captain. He was bought by KKR specifically for the purpose of being a viable captaincy option,” a source was quoted as saying to TOI.
Ironically, Rahane’s appointment would see him replace Shreyas Iyer, his Mumbai teammate, as KKR’s captain.
Rahane’s IPL Captaincy Experience
Ajinkya Rahane is no stranger to IPL captaincy. He previously led Rajasthan Royals in the 2018 and 2019 seasons, managing nine wins out of 24 matches during his tenure. While the record is modest, his ability to mentor young players and maintain composure in challenging situations is a significant asset for KKR.

Shreyas Iyer, who captained KKR to victory in IPL 2024, was picked up by Punjab Kings for ₹26.75 crore in the mega auction, the highest bid of the season. Iyer’s move left KKR searching for a leader, ultimately leading them to Rahane.
