‘No Empathy For Him’: Cummins Dismisses Bumrah’s Efforts in MCG Test Victory

The fourth Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the MCG saw a fierce battle between India and Australia. India lost the match and the series, 2-1. Jasprit Bumrah took nine wickets across both innings.

After the game, Australian skipper Pat Cummins was asked about Bumrah’s tireless efforts. His pointed response sparked debate over the series’ intensity.

Cummins Shows No Sympathy for Bumrah’s Herculean Efforts

At the post-match press conference, they asked Cummins about Bumrah’s valiant effort. He was blunt in his response.

“Empathy? Not too much,” with a bit of a smirk.

Bumrah’s performance at the MCG was nothing short of extraordinary. The Indian pacer bowled 28.4 overs in the first innings and 24.4 in the second. He took nine wickets in total. His effort raised his series tally to 30 wickets at an average of 12.83. He was India’s standout player.

Cummins was dismissive. But, he did acknowledge Bumrah’s impact. He said, “He is obviously a really good bowler in great form. He has been their most influential player.”

Cummins Reflects on the Victory

Pat Cummins was vital to Australia’s win. He scored 90 runs and took six wickets. For this, he was named Player of the Match.

Reflecting on the game, Cummins said:

“It was one of the best test match I have been involved in. The crowd was huge and overall the win looked certain on the pitch. So yeah it was one of those great wins,” he said, acknowledging the electric atmosphere created by a record crowd at the MCG.

India’s Collapse on Day 5

Despite starting Day 4 on a strong note, India’s hopes unraveled on the final day. Early dismissals of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli doomed the team. They triggered a middle-order collapse.

India fell short of their target, losing to Australia by 184 runs. Now, India trails 2-1 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The final Test at Sydney is a must-win for the Men in Blue.

What’s Next: India’s Mission in Sydney

With the series alive, the action now shifts to the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). India will fight to level the series at 2-2. The match starts on December 3. India must regain their form to save their WTC Final hopes.

A win or draw in Sydney would keep the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for Australia. It would also boost their ICC World Test Championship ranking.

The rivalry between India and Australia is heating up. Both teams are preparing for the final showdown in Sydney. Bumrah’s heroics could not win the match for India. But, his performance is a series highlight. But, it’s Pat Cummins and Australia who have the edge. The pressure is now on India to make a comeback.
